Adelaide Airport Runway Extension Project

CIC Civil successfully delivered precision earthworks, drainage systems and sub-base preparation for the Adelaide Airport runway extension, working alongside a Tier 1 contractor. Operating within strict aviation safety protocols, our team executed complex civil works adjacent to active runways while maintaining airport operations. The project required meticulous coordination with airside access requirements, night works windows and tight staging constraints to minimise operational disruption.

Through detailed quality assurance processes including ITPs and hold points across pavement layers, we achieved all compaction and level tolerances per specification, delivering critical infrastructure on schedule.

The Challenge

The Adelaide Airport runway extension demanded precision civil works while maintaining strict aviation safety standards and minimising disruption to live airport operations. Complex excavation and earthworks adjacent to active runways presented significant coordination challenges, with tight deadlines to prevent extended closure periods. Our team needed to work within restricted airside access windows, complete night works efficiently, and implement staged construction to allow continued airport functionality. Meeting stringent quality requirements for aviation surfaces and drainage systems required meticulous attention to detail, comprehensive testing protocols, and constant communication with airport operations to ensure safety and regulatory compliance throughout construction.

Our Solution

We mobilised a comprehensive fleet of specialised equipment including graders and excavators specifically suited to airfield construction requirements. Working in close collaboration with the lead contractor, we developed and implemented a detailed project management plan featuring 24-hour work cycles to maximise productivity during approved closure windows. Our experienced operators, familiar with aviation construction standards, applied their expertise to deliver precise grading and subbase preparation. We established rigorous quality assurance protocols with inspection and test plans (ITPs) and mandatory hold points across all pavement layers, maintaining constant communication with airport operations to coordinate activities and ensure continuous safety compliance.

The Result

CIC Civil completed the runway extension’s civil components ahead of schedule, enabling subsequent construction phases to commence early and supporting overall project acceleration. Our quality-focused approach ensured all earthworks and drainage installations met or exceeded aviation standards, with zero safety incidents recorded throughout the entire project duration. The drainage systems we installed performed flawlessly during post-construction testing, and our subbase preparation provided an ideal foundation for the runway surface construction. This project demonstrated our capability to execute complex infrastructure work in sensitive, high-stakes environments while maintaining operational flexibility, meeting exacting quality standards, and delivering exceptional outcomes for critical aviation infrastructure.
